Nagpur Violence: Specific houses, establishments targeted by mob, looks like a conspiracy, says Maharashtr

 Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Tuesday said the clashes in Nagpur seemed to be a conspiracy, adding that strict action would be taken against those who attacked police.

"In Nagpur, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal held protests. Rumours were spread that things containing religious content were burnt. It looks like a well-planned attack. No one has permission to take law and order into their hands," Fadnavis said.

"Attacks on Police will not be tolerated, strict action will be taken," added the chief minister.

He said that specific houses and establishments targeted by mob.

What happened in Nagpur?

A curfew was imposed in several parts of Nagpur on Tuesday amid the ongoing unrest triggered by demands to remove Aurangzeb's grave. A day earlier, tension had gripped central Nagpur when stones were hurled at police amid rumours that the holy book of the Muslim community was burnt, leaving two persons injured, officials said. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob in Chitnis Park and Mahal areas. Violence also reportedly spread to Kotwali and Ganeshpeth in the late afternoon, officials said.

Nagpur’s Mahal area witnessed violent clashes on Monday night following a dispute between two groups, leading to vandalism and arson. Several vehicles were set ablaze, and reports of stone pelting created panic among residents.

Eyewitnesses said tensions escalated quickly, with miscreants damaging property and torching vehicles as the situation spiralled out of control. Videos from the scene showed burning vehicles and scattered debris. At least two JCBs were set ablaze and a few more vehicles were also impacted. What led to the clashes?

According to police, rumours spread that the Quran was burnt during the agitation. Videos of the Bajrang Dal demonstration quickly went viral on social media, leading to outrage among members of the Muslim community.

A complaint was lodged at Ganeshpeth police station in the evening alleging the burning of the holy book.

Following the complaint, a large number of Muslim community members started gathering in various parts of the city, including Mahal, Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, and Chitanvis Park, police said.

Bajrang Dal office-bearers, however, refuted the allegations and claimed that they had only burned an effigy of Aurangzeb as part of their demonstration.
What are VHP's demands?

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has earlier submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeking the removal of Aurangzeb's grave.

The memorandum highlighted Aurangzeb's controversial legacy, particularly his conflicts with the Marathas, and termed his tomb as the symbol of "pain and slavery" to justify its removal.

The VHP cited Aurangzeb's role in the execution of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Maratha warrior king Shivaji Maharaj, as well as his alleged destruction of temples in Kashi, Mathura and Somnath.
